Elon Musk’s Twitter Ventures Forward with AI Development
According to reports in the US media on Tuesday, Twitter is continuing to develop artificial intelligence (AI) despite a recent call by Elon Musk for a global pause in the development of such technology. The billionaire entrepreneur has apparently purchased numerous expensive computing processors and hired AI engineers to work on the project, with one outlet suggesting that he has even considered creating a rival to ChatGPT. Meanwhile, Musk has cut Twitter’s staff as part of cost-cutting measures since his takeover of the company in late 2022.
Less than two weeks ago, Musk signed an open letter published by the Future of Life Institute that called for a six-month hiatus in the development of powerful AI systems, warning that they posed a significant risk to society and humanity. However, critics called the letter a “hot mess” of “AI hype,” with some claiming that it misrepresented an academic paper.
Despite this, Musk is apparently continuing to work on an AI language model to create written content, although it remains unclear what his intended purpose for it is. Generative AI could also be used for search or advertising, but Twitter has not clarified what it will be used for.
Several big tech companies, including Google, Meta, and Microsoft, have been working on AI for years to help with translations, search, and targeted advertising. In late 2022, OpenAI launched ChatGPT, which can generate long-form natural language text from a short prompt. Musk co-founded OpenAI but left the company in 2018. Microsoft has since invested billions of dollars in OpenAI and is using its technology in its Bing search engine.
